The year rolled around quickly to our annual late March week visiting Aunt Jean at her home in Lower Matacumbe in the Florida Keys. Over the years, different folks have come along, but it's morphed into a week where my sisters and I, plus our husbands, gather and spend a week enjoying some time together and particularly, time spent with our aunt.
This year, the weather was mostly wonderful, after a few early days of high winds. But we managed to do all the activities we love to do every year: bicycling, shopping, swimming, kayaking, scuba, snorkeling and fishing. There was time for talking, eating loads of freshly caught fish and key lime pie. A Keys first for me was a manicure/pedicure at the Blu Bamboo Salon and Day Spa.
We hadn't done any scuba diving for three years so getting some diving in was a major goal for Kate and me. I took a refresher course because I'm a novice diver. We had a great day with two dives at Looe Key. Mary and Ron snorkeled above us. Kate got a bonus dive in when Mary lost her prescription sunglasses in the boat basin and she volunteered to do a search and rescue mission. I'm happy to report that, after 30 minutes of grid work searching, she found them.
The other adventure I planned was a kayak trip to Indian Key. I had visited it during my visit last December and knew the group would enjoy the outing. We rented kayaks at Robbies and headed over to the island. After touring the ruins of the former settlement, we all went snorkeling on the eastern side of the island. It was a hit with everyone, thankfully!

Evening Bike Riding at Lewisville
It was so great to be able to leave work at the normal 5:00 time today and head out to Lewisville Square for a 25 mile bike ride. Daylight Savings went into effect yesterday, so now we've got sunlight til after 7:00.
Add the time change to a nice change in weather, with a 60 degree day, and it was the perfect end to a day holed up writing grant applications and grading final projects for LIB100.
It's the best mental health break available without a prescription.

58 Mile Training Route
Since I can't run, I'm turning my efforts to bicycling on the weekend. The weather was cooperative this weekend. Yesterday, Erik and I managed 33 miles yesterday despite Erik's difficulties with flat tires and broken chains. Today I had a goal of 50 miles and Erik went along with that plan as he rides faster, so rides ahead then loops back to rack up extra miles. This route was a mashup of two of our favorites, "Flat Louise" and our Lone Hickory out and back. Turned out to be a great route!
